Let’s Watch… Ghost in the Shell

The Live Action Remake

I was not expecting to have gone to the midnight showing of Ghost in the Shell (2017), but that is exactly what I did, and it was not worth it!

I don’t know anything about anime, I haven’t seen the original Ghost in the Shell anime or the TV show, so I went into this movie only thinking about THIS movie and not how it could compare to the original. That is how this review will be written… on this movie only!

This movie was kind of a miss for me! I was very curious about the movie from the trailers. It was a fun movie, but there was a lot of things that really got on my nerves. I will start with the things I enjoyed! The cinematography in this movie was, to my surprise, VERY good. There was a lot of slow B-Roll shots that you could almost compare to The Revenant. The framing was also very good. I also thought the technology in this world was interesting and I could honestly see a thousand years from now our world having some of the same.

What I did not like about the movie was practically everything else! First the story wasn’t interesting to me at all! I didn’t care about Major and that is always something filmmakers need to make sure is the first priority, for the audience to care about the main character. Also the dialogue in this movie was horrible. I did not believe a single conversation, they all felt scripted and fake. There were also a lot of one liners that made me laugh out loud at more than one time at serious points of the film.

If you are a fan of the anime version then I think you should go see it because I have heard it does it justice and those people really loved this movie! If you are someone that wants to go see a fun action movie….maybe go see Chips!

My Score: 5/10

Movie Suggestion- A Cure For Wellness

Much better than the reviews are saying

A Cure for Wellness is a psychological horror that came out in February. It is directed by Gore Verbinski, the director of the Pirates of the Caribbean films. This was a film that I was extremely curious about leading up to it. I went to the movie without looking at any reviews and absolutely loved it! It is an original story, which is something you don’t see a lot of these days, that kept me on the edge of my seat and the script was very well written. It is about a man that goes to a hospital to get a business associate and bring him back to New York. When he goes to this hospital, or wellness center. Things are very weird and no one is really helping him find the man. He finds out there is some bad stuff going down at the place and he isn’t sure if he can leave.

This is a film that is completely different from anything else that is out there right now. Including all of the other horror films out now. It will make you cringe and feel uncomfortable and those things might throw people off. But A Cure for Wellness is a very special film in my opinion because of the fact that it is so different and so original. As the movie starts you will start to think that it is like Shutter Island, but once the story starts being told it is its own movie!

Another wonderful thing about this film is the cinematography. It is an absolutely beautiful film with great visuals!

If you are going to see A Cure for Wellness you should be aware that it is a film that goes on and on without really telling you anything until the end of the second act into the start of the third and for a lot of people that will make them go mad, for me I really had to praise that. I felt very interested in what was going on during the film even though I was extremely confused, and once I got those answers I was  very satisfied.

I am not going to say anything about the story, other than the fact that you need to be open to what happens at the end. I haven’t seen a movie end in the way this one did for a very long time and at first I really didn’t like it. Then I thought about it and after my second viewing I really appreciated it.

GO SEE A CURE FOR WELLNESS! It is an original film that is being very risky and it really should have gotten more praise then it did. Unfortunately it has a 39% on Rotten Tomatoes and I believe that has caused a lot of people to not want to see it. Be aware though you will see a lot of senior citizens naked. So yeah. Be prepared for that.

Disney Remakes

Should they be made?

It’s 2017… it’s a time of remakes, sequels, and unoriginal content. At the top of all of this is Disney! They are currently remaking all of their Disney classics and they are doing an amazing job at it. Many people are asking though, do they need to?

Yes and no.

Disney’s intention, when it comes to their remakes, is to introduce a whole new generation to the Disney classics. Me personally, I have enjoyed all of the Disney remakes that have come out so far! Some of my highlights have been The Jungle Book, Cinderella, and most recently Beauty and the Beast. Disney really knows what they are doing and it is showing from the money they are making. They have big plans for the future. The remakes in development right now include:

  1. The Lion King
  2. Snow White
  3. Peter Pan
  4. Winnie the Pooh
  5. Aladdin
  6. Mulan
  7. The Little Mermaid (Not the knock off one that released a trailer a week ago)
  8. An Aladdin prequel
  9. The Sword in the Stone
  10. Pinocchio
  11. Dumbo

And many more are rumored.

A lot of people are saying there is really no point in turning all of these films into live action remakes, and that might be true. The most recent Beauty and the Beast has caused a lot of those remarks. But in my opinion I say KEEP THEM COMING! I am an enormous Disney fan and they haven’t disappointed me yet. If Disney was making these remakes and they were sucking (like the DCEU) then I would be completely against it, but Disney knows what they are doing! They are succeeding immensely with Marvel and Star Wars as well!

I am a little skeptical about the live action Dumbo movie because I am not the biggest Tim Burton fan, and I am trying to comprehend how they will make a live action Winnie the Pooh that wont be creepy. But if anyone can do it, its Disney!

Let’s Watch… Beauty and the Beast 2017

It’s as good as the original!

Back in 1991, at the start of the Disney Renaissance, a little movie called Beauty and the Beast came out. It went on to be the first animated movie to be nominated for the best picture award at the oscars and it captured the hearts of millions. Now, in 2017, Disney is attempting to bring it back. But the big question is…

Is it any good?

The answer is YES! It is absolutely amazing! Beauty and the Beast 2017 is a gorgeous recreation of the original, and Disney really brings out the magic in this film. Emma Watson as Belle truly shines in this film and her voice is remarkable! ‘Belles theme’ in my opinion is better then the original song just because of the way Emma Watson sings it and the ‘Be Our Guest’ number is amazing! I can’t way to go back and see it in IMAX 3D just for that part!

The actors in the film are Emma Watson (Belle), Luke Evans (Gaston), Josh Gad (LeFou), and Dan Stevens (Beast). They are wonderful, every performance worked great for me! There has been a lot of criticism that I have seen that it is just an exact remake of the original and that is completely not true. There is plenty of new songs and story lines that bring more substance and understanding to the original story line. The new songs are very forgettable though and that part took me out of the film a bit.

Beauty and the Beast is absolutely a must see for Disney fanatics like me, and for non Disney fans I believe you will still enjoy this film!

My Rating: 8.5/10

Let’s Watch… Kong: Skull Island

Is this movie any good?

From director Jordan Vogt- Roberts comes a whole new spin on the King Kong story, Kong: Skull Island. It is about a group of people that go to an uncharted island and try to discover it, but the island is not quite what it seems. They discover Kong, a giant gorilla who lives on the island, along with many other different creatures.

The question is though…is it any good?

Kong: Skull Island is good and you should go see it. As you may guess though it obviously isn’t a classic or an Oscar film. This film is a monster movie and it knows it. The acting in it isn’t the best which is surprising considering the cast of Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, and John C. Reilly (who gave the best performance). That is forgivable though because if you are going into a movie like this expecting a great performance from actors then you are going into it for the wrong reasons! You should be going into this movie wanting to see a fun “popcorn film” where monsters reign supreme!

The best things about this film by far are the way it looks, and the creatures. Kong: Skull Island is probably my favorite looking movie so far this year. You could compare it to Mad Max: Fury Road from 2 years ago.

The scene where they are going to the island is also the best scene of the film and the best King Kong scene i have seen out of any of the movies.

In conclusion, it is in my personal opinion that you should definitely go see this movie if you want to have a fun time in the theater but that is it. Do not except a ground breaking film, as I’m sure you already wouldn’t be any ways.

My Rating: 8/10
